Laser treatment for presbyopia
Discover how laser eye treatments for presbyopia can restore your visual acuity and rejuvenate your vision.

Laser correction for presbyopia – see everything more clearly again!
The desire to have presbyopia treated with a laser often arises in people from the age of 40 – because presbyopia becomes increasingly common from this age.
Over time, the natural lens of the eye loses flexibility, making it harder to focus on nearby objects. The result: near visual acuity declines, and everyday tasks such as reading or working on a computer become increasingly tiring.
Many people turn to reading glasses at this stage, but ophthalmology – specifically refractive surgery – offers a modern alternative: laser treatment for presbyopia.
Specialised laser eye treatment options such as PRESBYOND®, monovision or the refractive lens exchange can effectively correct age-related visual impairment. These methods can alter the eye’s refractive power so it can once again see both near and distant objects sharply.
Thanks to these advanced laser eye procedures, patients can often stop using reading glasses entirely and manage most everyday situations without visual aids. Choosing to have presbyopia treated with laser can therefore not only improve vision quality but also significantly enhance overall quality of life. You can book your non-binding consultation with our ophthalmologists at the laser eye centre in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe.
What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a natural age-related change – not a disease but part of the ageing process. The first signs usually appear around the age of 40 and increase with age. These signs mainly include reduced near vision, affecting activities such as reading or working at a PC.
This is partly caused by reduced elasticity of the eye’s lens, so it adapts less well to near vision. In addition, the ciliary muscle can weaken with age; it is also responsible for changing the curvature of the lens. The result is blurred near vision, while distance vision is usually unaffected.

How does presbyopia develop?
The cause of presbyopia is the loss of elasticity of the eye’s natural lens. This differs from hyperopia (farsightedness), which often appears at a younger age and is usually caused by an eyeball that is too short.
With presbyopia, the eye’s own lens gradually loses its ability to accommodate. As a result, the affected lens has increasing difficulty shifting focus from near to far. Presbyopia reduces the eye’s refractive power – meaning visual acuity at different distances is no longer as it used to be.
As you age, the ciliary muscle involved in changing the lens curvature is also less able to contract. This visual defect cannot be corrected by special eye-training exercises.
Near vision becomes particularly difficult in low light with presbyopia. You may have trouble focusing on objects or need to hold a book at arm’s length to read it. Distance vision remains unimpaired.
In presbyopia, the so-called near point (the closest distance at which a nearby object can still be seen sharply) shifts progressively farther away.
Towards the end of the day, symptoms of fatigue may appear, and some sufferers report headaches. Many people decide at this point to use reading glasses or to undergo a laser procedure to treat presbyopia.

FAQs
What are the symptoms of presbyopia?
As with many conditions, presbyopia has various symptoms. However, some are particularly indicative:
To read comfortably, you need a brighter environment — more light than usual.
Headaches often occur as a result of eye strain.
Tired eyes
If you want to read something sharply, you tend to hold it farther from your body. Focusing at close range is difficult. This applies when reading a book, checking price tags in a supermarket, or composing a text message on a smartphone.
Can you become presbyopic despite laser eye treatment?
Yes — you can develop presbyopia despite having had laser eye treatment. Procedures like LASIK do not prevent presbyopia. For this reason, LASIK is generally not performed for patients around or over 45. If you have further questions, contact us and we will explain everything in detail.
How quickly does presbyopia worsen?
Roughly speaking, presbyopia progresses by about +0.5 to +1.0 dioptres every five years.
When does presbyopia stop?
Presbyopia is typically fully developed by around the age of 65 and usually does not progress further.
How much does it cost to treat presbyopia?
The cost of treating presbyopia starts at 990.00 euros per eye. The exact price will be clarified during a personal consultation as part of a detailed examination.
Does health insurance cover laser treatment for presbyopia?
In most cases, health insurance providers do not cover the costs, since correction of the eyes for presbyopia is generally not considered a medically necessary treatment.
