Lens exchange
Welcome to a life without reading glasses with a lens exchange procedure at the eye laser center in Stuttgart or Karlsruhe. By replacing the lens to treat presbyopia, we help people enjoy life carefree again.

Monofocal lens and multifocal lens – what is the difference?
Monofocal lenses, also called “single‑power lenses”, typically provide sharp vision only for distance. You will therefore still need reading glasses.
Multifocal lenses, also called “multi‑power lenses”, usually allow you to be largely independent of glasses, as their special design provides a sharp image at several distance ranges.
Lens exchange
Combined with individually prescribed glasses, this lens implant enlarges the image and projects the retinal image onto the healthy parts of the macula. Even if macular degeneration progresses – which the lens cannot stop – the patient’s brain can learn to use different areas of the retina and thus preserve visual function.

What happens during a multifocal lens operation?
During a multifocal lens operation, the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. In Germany alone, this procedure is performed more than 800,000 times a year, making it one of the most common surgeries overall.
Usually a so‑called monofocal lens is implanted, which allows clear distance vision. You will still need glasses for near tasks. If a cataract is present, your health insurance will cover this operation.
The monofocal lens is the standard treatment for cataracts. If you opt for modern multifocal lenses, you may be able to do without glasses altogether. Multifocal lenses provide a sharp image at different distances thanks to their special design.
If an intraocular lens with these additional benefits is desired or required, the patient should expect extra costs. We will be happy to advise you about cataract surgery costs in a personal consultation.

What are the risks and side effects?
Possible risks and side effects include infections, inflammation, or increased intraocular pressure. These risks are minimized by following hygiene protocols during and after the procedure.
When performed by an experienced and capable surgeon, such risks are reduced to an absolute minimum.

Safe lens replacement with the LENSAR laser
In the treatment of cataracts or presbyopia, medicine has relied for many years on modern artificial lenses. During the operation, your clouded natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. Thanks to the use of the LENSAR laser, blade‑free implantation of these lenses is now possible. This technique removes the need for the surgeon’s scalpel and makes lens replacement simpler and safer than before.
More precise results
The risk of complications is minimised
The LENSAR laser delivers the best results
While leading eye laser centers in the USA are already equipped with LENSAR lasers, Dr. Liliana Bányai was one of the first eye surgeons in Germany to adopt this proven method. In all of southern Germany, she is the only surgeon working with this innovative laser.
Does this procedure help with cataracts or presbyopia?
All the incisions required for cataract surgery or the treatment of presbyopia can now be performed by the LENSAR femtosecond laser – with far greater precision and safety than even an experienced surgeon could achieve by hand.
For an even better visual outcome, each incision is planned by the surgeon and monitored using a real‑time 3D video of the eye.
Only the partial steps approved by the surgeon are carried out by the laser. This approach guarantees maximum safety and precision during lens replacement.
