Femto LASIK laser eye treatment
Our Femto LASIK procedure uses modern laser technology to precisely reshape your cornea and restore your vision.

Femto LASIK briefly explained
When it comes to laser myopia, there are several effective corrective methods that can significantly improve vision. The most popular options include SMILE® Pro and FEMTO LASIK.
A laser procedure can help you regain your usual visual acuity, allowing you to see both distance and near clearly—completely without visual aids.
If you feel restricted by your glasses or contact lenses, laser eye surgery can improve your quality of life. Thanks to advanced technology, this operation has become a routine procedure with minimal risks. Using an excimer laser and a femtosecond laser, the surgeon performs a precise correction within seconds, making your refractive error a thing of the past.
The eye laser corrects excessive refractive power or compensates for the elongated eyeball associated with myopia, restoring vision. Myopia often occurs together with corneal astigmatism; in these cases, laser eye surgery is frequently still a very good option.
The benefits of Femto LASIK
Part of LASIK’s success is that incision-related complications are largely avoided. In this laser eye procedure, the flap is created with a very fine femtosecond laser. As a result, the flap typically heals without problems after treatment.
Femto-LASIK forms the upper corneal layers into a small hinged flap that is folded back. The procedure also promotes a faster healing process than conventional LASIK. With a monovision approach, Femto-LASIK can also address presbyopia.
Exclusion of incision-related complications
Faster healing process
Precise flap creation with a femtosecond laser
Correction of farsightedness and presbyopia
Problem‑free flap healing
High patient satisfaction
Application of Femto LASIK
Whether your eyes are suitable for LASIK depends primarily on the type and degree of your refractive error. Unlike ReLEx SMILE or SMILE® Pro, Femto LASIK can also treat farsightedness up to +5 diopters.
Short-sightedness (myopia): up to approx. -10 dpt
Farsightedness (hyperopia): up to approx. +5 dpt
Corneal curvature (astigmatism): up to approx. 5 dpt
LASIK eye surgery is not possible in cases of:
Age under 18 years
Insufficient corneal thickness
Presence of a systemic disease (e.g., rheumatic disease, diabetes)
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Eye disease (e.g., cataract, glaucoma)
Unstable refraction values (refractive error changing continuously, >/- 0.5 diopters per year)

Femtosecond laser from
Carl Zeiss
For Femto-LASIK, we use the state-of-the-art VisuMax femtosecond laser from Carl Zeiss. This femtosecond laser features adjustable contact interfaces and can be adapted to a wide range of corneal conditions thanks to its high precision.
The laser can compensate for slight eye movements (eye tracking). This flexibility ensures maximum cutting precision in Femto-LASIK and helps us treat patients in our eye centres with the highest technical standards for equipment and methodology.
The Femto-LASIK method consists of two treatment steps: the VisuMax creates the flap and the MEL 90 excimer laser corrects the refractive error by removing tissue. With its technical “fingertip precision,” the VisuMax femtosecond laser provides absolute safety and effectiveness for laser eye surgery, even in high refractive errors. The method ensures a high level of comfort during the procedure. The lasers used help to ensure an optimal treatment outcome.
Whether your eye is suitable for Femto-LASIK depends primarily on the severity and type of your refractive error. We generally use this laser method to treat myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. After laser treatment, you can enjoy full vision without glasses or contact lenses.

Answers to your questions about Femto LASIK
How does Femto LASIK work?
In the conventional Femto-LASIK procedure, the incision in the cornea is created by a femtosecond laser to produce a thin lamella, the so‑called “flap”. This flap on the corneal surface is then folded back, and the refractive correction underneath is performed with an excimer laser. The term “flap” is English and refers to this small hinged section. Once the refractive procedure is complete, the flap is repositioned and the healing process begins. During recovery you should avoid strenuous physical activity for the time being. The flap is not noticeable after treatment and heals on its own.
Femto LASIK Alternatives
If you prefer an even gentler, more precise and innovative option for myopia or astigmatism, we recommend the SMILE® Pro procedure. The available laser treatment options are extensive and can be applied very gently for the patient. Which laser method is best for you can be determined in a personal consultation. For people with an extremely thin cornea, A-PRK or LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis) may be suitable alternatives. A lens implant can also be an appropriate solution for some farsighted patients.
Femto LASIK Risks
As with any treatment, Femto-LASIK carries possible risks and complications, but there is generally no reason to worry. These complications are very rare and can include infection, dry eyes or halos. A flap complication is also possible: opening and closing the corneal flap can lead to slipping or folds. Nevertheless, Femto-LASIK is considered very safe and gentle and has a large number of satisfied patients.
Femto LASIK treatment steps
The actual laser correction with LASIK takes only a few seconds on the day of treatment in Stuttgart. Including preparation as well as pre‑ and post‑operative examinations, you should plan for about two hours at the clinic. Otherwise, you do not need to make special preparations for the day of the procedure.
- Using the high‑precision VisuMax laser, the surgeon creates a wafer‑thin lamella on the cornea (the flap) during Femto‑LASIK. This is folded back like a book cover.
- The excimer laser then removes tissue from the exposed, insensitive layer of the cornea. This step only takes a few seconds, your refractive error is corrected and your vision is restored. The laser‑assisted removal of corneal tissue changes the corneal curvature and thus the eye’s refractive power.
- Finally, the flap is repositioned like a natural bandage. The flap adheres immediately to the remaining cornea and closes the eye’s surface completely. Thanks to this natural dressing, you typically do not experience pain after the procedure. This is why patients often find this method particularly comfortable.
It is important that you do not drive immediately after the treatment. Our centre in Stuttgart or Karlsruhe is easily accessible by public transport. More detailed information about the procedure is available here or directly at our laser eye centre.
Immediately after LASIK surgery, your improved vision begins. Your visual acuity is often much better right away. In the first hours after treatment you should still take it easy: avoid straining your eyes and do not rub or touch them. You will receive a detailed follow‑up schedule. Some patients experience dry eyes after the operation; this usually resolves on its own and can be treated with eye drops in consultation with your doctor.

What is the difference between LASIK and Femto LASIK?
Femto‑LASIK is a further development of LASIK. The main difference is that the corneal flap in Femto‑LASIK is created with a femtosecond laser rather than a microkeratome. Nonetheless, conventional LASIK is still used in certain situations where it remains beneficial.
What is the difference between LASIK costs and Femto LASIK costs?
The term LASIK costs generally refers to expenses for LASIK procedures. The Femto LASIK costs refer specifically to the modern variant in which the corneal flap is created with a femtosecond laser instead of a microkeratome. Femto‑LASIK is more precise and gentler, which is reflected in the price: at Bányai Neue Augen, Femto LASIK costs start at €2,200 per eye, with interest‑free installment plans from €71 per month. Classic LASIK procedures without a femtosecond laser are often slightly cheaper but offer fewer advantages in terms of safety and healing.
Which is better: LASIK or Femto LASIK?
Femto‑LASIK is an advancement of LASIK and is generally more modern and gentler. It is performed with a high‑precision femtosecond laser that forms a small hinged corneal flap, promoting a faster healing process than conventional LASIK. In some cases, conventional LASIK is still appropriate and continues to provide substantial benefit.
What speaks against Femto LASIK?
As with any treatment, Femto‑LASIK carries potential risks and complications, but there is usually no reason for undue concern. These complications are rare and can include infection, dry eyes or halos. A flap complication is possible, since opening and closing the corneal flap can cause slipping or folds. Nevertheless, Femto‑LASIK is very safe and gentle and has many satisfied patients. LASIK cannot correct presbyopia. At Frau Doctor‑medic Bányai, the Presbyond laser blended vision method is applied for presbyopia.
How dangerous is LASIK?
Laser eye surgery is well established, and the procedures have been extensively tested and studied. LASIK is a tried‑and‑tested method and is considered very safe. The healing process after conventional LASIK can be somewhat longer than after Femto‑LASIK, and the risk of complications such as infection, corneal irregularities or tear‑film issues is slightly higher—but these complications remain rare.
Which is better: LASIK or SMILE?
Both Femto‑LASIK and SMILE® Pro are state‑of‑the‑art procedures performed by highly trained eye surgeons using very precise equipment. Which is best for an individual patient depends on the patient’s refractive error and eye condition. SMILE® Pro is currently considered the gentlest and safest option because flap‑related complications can be avoided.
