ICL Lens Implants

With ICL you can experience new eyes without a laser!

Ideal for those who are not eligible for laser treatment, ICL offers a reversible option to achieve crystal-clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.

What is a phakic intraocular lens?

The phakic intraocular lens (phakos (Greek: lens)) is an artificial lens implanted into the eye in addition to the eye’s natural lens. In our laser centre, only posterior chamber lenses are used as this alternative to laser eye surgery. These are placed between the iris and the eye’s natural lens and, unlike anterior chamber lenses, do not need to be attached to the iris or the chamber angle with special haptics.

The entire procedure is reversible. This means we can remove the lens implant at any time, if necessary. There are numerous intraocular lens models; the lens we use is the Visian ICL® (implantable Collamer lens). The Visian ICL® is an implantable contact lens that can be used for both myopia and hyperopia. In addition, a corneal astigmatism can be corrected simultaneously with a toric ICL implantation.

The implant has been successfully implanted more than 250,000 times worldwide since 1997 and is particularly valued for the rapid improvement in visual acuity and the fast, painless recovery after the procedure. This is due in part to the intraocular lens material—Collamer—which is highly biocompatible.

Advantages of ICL lens implants

Proven, highly biocompatible and invisible

No foreign-body sensation

Also suitable for thinner corneas

Short procedure time (15 min) and short recovery (approx. 1 day)

Reduced dry-eye symptoms and built-in UV protection

Reversible — intraocular lenses can be removed at any time

What are the areas of application for an ICL lens implant?

The Visian ICL® should only be implanted by very experienced eye surgeons, such as Dr. Bányai, because the use of these posterior chamber lenses is an intervention inside the eye and not just on the surface of the eye, as with femto-LASIK. Visian ICL® is usually required when laser treatment is not possible due to very high refractive error or a cornea that is too thin.

Myopia (short-sightedness): from approx. -0.5 dpt to approx. -18 dpt

Hyperopia (farsightedness): from approx. +0.5 dpt to approx. +10 dpt

Corneal astigmatism: up to approx. +6 dpt

ICL Lens Implant Alternatives

Ophthalmologist Dr. Bányai and her experienced medical team offer various laser eye methods and surgical procedures in their new ophthalmology practice in Stuttgart Mitte and at the eye laser centre in Karlsruhe. These laser eye surgery methods include:

  • SMILE® Pro
  • Femto LASIK
  • Presbyond
  • Advanced PRK & Lasek
  • Topography-controlled Lasik
  • Monovision

These are applied depending on the patient’s initial situation.

ICL Lens Implant Treatment

  1. Dr. Bányai creates a microscopic opening at the edge of your cornea.
  2. The phakic lens is then inserted through this tiny opening and positioned.
  3. Because the openings are minimal, your eye recovers on its own very quickly and you can leave our centre soon after the procedure — without glasses or contact lenses.

Treatment results

Within a few hours after phakic lens implantation, your visual quality improves continuously. You can usually drive again after just a few days. However, it is possible that your eyes will be more sensitive to light during the first few weeks after surgery.

ICL Lens Implant Pre- and Aftercare

Ophthalmologist Dr. Bányai and her experienced team offer state-of-the-art refractive surgery procedures — including the implantation of ICLs (implantable Collamer lenses), a proven alternative to laser eye surgery for high refractive errors or thin corneas:

Please note:

To be prepared for all eventualities, please arrive fasting. Your last meal before the procedure should be at least six hours prior.

Do not use make-up, perfume, aftershave, or hairspray on the day of treatment.

You are not allowed to drive yourself after the treatment. We recommend arranging for someone to pick you up.

Our years of experience in eye treatments make our eye laser centre the first choice in the greater Stuttgart area for intraocular lens implantation.

Feel free to contact us and request information about our locations and your personal treatment.
