Laser treatment for farsightedness – see nearby objects clearly again

You can have your farsightedness treated with laser at our eye laser centre in Karlsruhe or Stuttgart. We offer state-of-the-art refractive surgery methods to restore visual acuity without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

As a rule, we use Femto LASIK and ICL lenses to correct farsightedness. A preliminary examination determines which method is suitable for you. To achieve a lasting correction and clear vision without visual aids, we offer various surgical and laser procedures.

The laser procedure modifies the cornea to adjust the eye’s refractive power so it can focus nearby images sharply – something that is usually not possible for people with farsightedness.

Laser surgery offers a long-term option to treat this visual impairment. For example, the LASIK procedure (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) can correct a farsighted eye so that no further visual aids are required for sharp vision. The refractive error can be corrected in the long term.

What exactly is farsightedness? (Hyperopia)

Farsightedness means that nearby objects appear blurred and indistinct. Farsightedness is also called hyperopia or hypermetropia. Do you have trouble reading or seeing up close? Do you often experience headaches or eye strain? Emerging farsightedness could be the cause.

With this refractive error, nearby objects are blurred by your eye, while distant objects remain in focus. This is caused by a faulty refractive power of the lens.

The incoming light is not properly focused on the retina, so a sharp image does not form. To compensate for this faulty refractive power, the eye’s ciliary muscle is used, which can lead to overexertion.

This can impair the eye’s accommodation. Accommodation is the ability of the eye to focus on objects at different distances. In young people, sustained accommodation can change the lens’s refractive power by about 20 percent.

Preliminary examinations

Visit us in Stuttgart or Karlsruhe for a preliminary examination. Together we’ll find the ideal laser eye treatment for you.

Laser eye surgery

The treatment is carried out by our experienced ophthalmologists at the laser eye centre in Stuttgart or Karlsruhe and usually takes only about 20 minutes, depending on the method. Afterwards, you can enjoy your improved vision.

Follow-up

After a few days, you’ll typically have full visual acuity. Follow-up checks take place 1 day, 1 week, and 3 months after treatment.

What forms of farsightedness are there?

There are two main forms of farsightedness, the more common being axial hyperopia.

In axial hyperopia, a too-short eyeball is responsible for the vision problems. Due to this eyeball anomaly, the focal point of incoming light shifts behind the retina.

As a result, nearby objects appear blurred and vision is impaired.

The rarer form is refractive hyperopia, in which the refractive power of the cornea and lens is reduced. Because the lens’s refractive power is too low, the focal point falls behind the retina, producing a blurred image.

So-called age-related farsightedness (presbyopia) occurs as a result of normal age-related changes. This is a natural aging process even in people with previously normal vision. Therefore, many people require a reading glass from around the age of 45.

What methods do we offer for laser treatment of hyperopia?

We offer numerous methods to correct refractive errors. A personal consultation is required to determine the best surgical approach for you. The chosen treatment always depends on the degree and type of farsightedness. Accurate assessment of the corneal layers and corneal thickness—especially with thin corneas—is crucial for planning treatment.

A thorough preliminary examination by our ophthalmology specialists is always part of the treatment. In the eye laser centres of Doctor-medic Bányai and team we basically offer the following laser treatment options to help improve vision in farsightedness: PRESBYOND® (especially for presbyopia), Femto LASIK, SMILE Pro® Hyperopia, and ICL lenses (not a lens exchange, but supplementation with an artificial lens).

Femto LASIK

The Femto LASIK procedure uses modern laser technology to precisely shape your cornea and give you clear vision.

  • Use: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia
  • Duration: 15 – 20 min
  • Works on almost all corneal types

ICL Lens Implants

ICL is ideal for those who are not eligible for laser treatment and offers a reversible option to achieve crystal-clear vision.

  • Absolute independence from glasses (sharp vision at near and far)
  • Permanent correction, prevention of cataracts
  • Quick recovery

PRESBYOND®

Presbyond® corrects presbyopia by specifically adjusting the eyes for near and distance vision—providing sharp sight without intermediate compromises.

  • For presbyopia – suitable from around 40 years
  • Only 15 min surgical time per eye
  • One of the gentlest treatment methods

SMILE Pro® Hyperopia

SMILE® Pro Hyperopia’s advanced, minimally invasive technology offers a life-changing solution in under 10 seconds!

  • Use: farsightedness
  • Duration: 15 – 20 min (the laser step itself takes about 10 seconds)
  • High success with a tiny laser incision

How do I know I am farsighted?

Short-sightedness is usually recognized by the inability to see distant objects clearly. The visual field appears blurry and indistinct; a sharp image in the distance is not possible, which indicates nearsightedness.

Myopia or nearsightedness is not always the cause of blurred vision. The symptoms of myopia can sometimes be temporary. In such cases, the eye may simply be fatigued and unable to focus sharply.

Having blurred distance vision does not always mean you are immediately myopic. If the condition is persistent, myopia may be the cause. If you suspect nearsightedness, consult an ophthalmologist or optician for an eye test to determine whether you are short-sighted.

FAQs — Laser treatment for farsightedness

How much does laser eye surgery cost for farsightedness?

The cost of laser treatment for farsightedness depends on the specific laser procedure. The Femto-LASIK method for farsightedness starts at €2,200 and can be paid in installments, which can amount to around €91 per month.

To determine an exact price, it is best to schedule a personal consultation. In that appointment we can identify the type of refractive error, the appropriate treatment, and the exact cost.

Feel free to take advantage of our 0% financing for 24 months. For further information on eye laser costs, please contact us.

Up to how many dioptres in farsightedness is laser eye surgery possible?

The refractive power of the eyes is measured in dioptres. Laser correction for farsightedness is generally possible up to about +5 dioptres (dpt). In exceptional cases, treatment at higher values is possible, but corneal thickness must be carefully considered. In most cases the dioptre values for farsightedness are below +5 dpt. An eye test at an optician and a consultation with an ophthalmologist is recommended.

Can the PRK or LASEK methods be used to treat refractive errors such as farsightedness?

Laser procedures for farsightedness can include LASEK and PRK. In most cases, LASIK or Femto-LASIK is the preferred method to correct farsightedness. The SMILE Pro method, however, is effective primarily for nearsightedness and is therefore not used for farsightedness. Other options for farsightedness include PRESBYOND and the gentle use of ICL lenses. Which method is best for you will be determined after an eye examination in one of our ophthalmology practices.

Is laser eye surgery covered by health insurance?

In general, health insurance does not cover the costs of laser eye surgery for farsightedness. It is considered a non-essential procedure and is often treated as a “cosmetic” operation.

There are some exceptions in which health insurers may contribute. We also offer financing options. For details, please contact us for a follow-up discussion.

From what age can I have farsightedness lasered?

Laser treatment to correct farsightedness is generally possible from the age of 18. It is important, however, that your prescription has not changed significantly in the last 12 to 24 months, since stable values are a prerequisite for the procedure.

For presbyopia, which typically occurs from around 40–45 years of age, specialized procedures such as PRESBYOND or refractive lens exchange (RLE) can be effective alternatives. Which method is most suitable depends on individual factors and should be clarified during a comprehensive examination by a specialist.

Are there risks and side effects of laser treatment for farsightedness?

There are risks and side effects associated with laser treatment for farsightedness. Many patients initially experience increased sensitivity to glare or dry eyes. The heightened sensitivity usually subsides over time, and there are effective ways to manage dry eyes. Blurred vision after laser eye surgery is also possible but typically resolves. You should have full visual acuity within three weeks at the latest.

Is laser treatment for farsightedness performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis?

Laser treatment for hyperopia is an outpatient procedure. You do not stay in the clinic the day before or the day after the operation.
