Another technical term is ametropia \u2013 it refers to an optically non-ideal eye, where incoming light rays are not correctly focused on the retina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does the term refractive error mean? A refractive error occurs when the shape or structure of the eye deviates from the norm. A refractive error can manifest in different ways. In most cases the eye&#8217;s ability to focus \u2014 its refractive power \u2014 is impaired, resulting in reduced visual acuity. This means that vision from one eye, either at distance or up close, can appear blurred. The beams focused by the cornea and lens meet in front of the retina. Therefore, sharp vision is only possible at short distances. Objects in the distance are perceived as blurred. This visual defect is called myopia or short-sightedness. It is nonetheless a refractive error. Corneal curvature is also called stabsichtigkeit or astigmatism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cause is an uneven shape or surface of the cornea itself. Because the refractive power is altered, light beams cannot be correctly focused or refracted. Light rays do not form a single point on the retina. At around age 45 \u2014 with increasing age \u2014 the eye&#8217;s lens begins to harden in everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With presbyopia the lens loses flexibility and can no longer adjust to near objects (the ability to accommodate decreases \u2014 the lens&#8217;s refractive power is reduced). Again, light rays fall incorrectly on the retina and no sharp image is produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients affected by presbyopia typically wear progressive (varifocal) glasses, while people with normal vision may use simple reading glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A permanent correction for ametropia or presbyopia can be achieved with the Presbyond procedure, a special variant of Femto-LASIK, or by implanting an artificial lens (an intraocular lens).
