Most people have a slightly curved cornea, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neue-augen.de\/auge\/\">eye<\/a> is not naturally perfect. A corneal curvature of up to about 0.75 <a href=\"https:\/\/neue-augen.de\/en\/blog\/laser-eye-surgery\/eye-lasers-dioptres-up-to-what-value-is-it-possible-according-to-dr-med-banyai\/\">dioptres<\/a> can usually be compensated by the eye itself and does not need to be corrected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more severe corneal curvature, <a href=\"https:\/\/neue-augen.de\/en\/blog\/laser-eye-surgery\/spongy-vision-in-the-distance-and-nearby\/\">vision near and far is distorted<\/a>. Round objects can appear stretched and rod-shaped (hence the term intentionality).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"why-do-these-complaints-arise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do these complaints arise?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a corneal curvature, the cornea does not focus incident light on a single point of the retina, but on several focal points at the same time. The result is a permanently blurred or distorted image. The eye tries to compensate for this blur by continuously tensing the ciliary muscles (accommodation). This persistent muscle tension leads to fatigue, eye pain and headaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially with mild astigmatism, which the eye can still partially compensate for, this compensation effort is high. A cross-sectional clinical study with 2,157 participants showed that astigmatism is significantly more common in people with headaches than in the symptom-free control group. As a mechanism, the authors identified the overactivation of the ciliary muscles and the associated irritation of the ophthalmic nerve (a branch of the trigeminal nerve).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10768566\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00b9<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If these symptoms occur, an ophthalmologist&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/neue-augen.de\/en\/appointment\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"91596464888\">appointment<\/a> should be arranged. Instead, the symptoms are often indirect: head tilting while reading, frequent winking or blinking, school difficulties despite normal intelligence, or complaining of headaches after class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study from Hong Kong with 418 primary school children (8\u201311 years) showed that 46.5 percent of the children studied had an astigmatism of at least 0.75 dioptres. The authors found that less time outdoors and more close-up work (screen, reading) were associated with higher astigmatism prevalence and greater axis elongation of the eye.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9245603\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00b2<\/a><\/sup> A regular eye examination in childhood is therefore important in order to detect undetected corneal curvature at an early stage and to prevent deterioration of vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-types-of-corneal-curvature-are-there\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What types of corneal curvature are there?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ophthalmologists generally distinguish between regular astigmatism (most common form, uniform curvature deviation in one axis) and irregular astigmatism (rarer form, for example after injuries or in the eye disease <a href=\"https:\/\/neue-augen.de\/en\/blog\/corneal-disease\/does-eye-rubbing-lead-to-keratoconus-dr-med-banyai-explains\/\">keratoconus<\/a>).
