Laser eye surgery | Who is a suitable candidate?
More and more people want to do without glasses and contact lenses and are considering laser eye treatment. This not only improves vision but also enhances quality of life.
At the Bányai Laser Eye Centre, we perform numerous laser eye procedures each year using state-of-the-art equipment. These innovative, highly precise methods for correcting refractive errors are minimally invasive and virtually painless.
In this article, we explain whether you are a suitable candidate for laser eye treatment and outline all other requirements.
Prerequisites for laser eye surgery
The prerequisites for laser eye treatment are a minimum age of 18, stable vision, healthy eyes, and generally good overall health. Laser eye treatment is not performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If the prerequisites are met, the next question is: Which method is right for me? Depending on the type of refractive error, your age and overall health, the appropriate laser eye surgery method is chosen. Using the online laser eye suitability test, you can find out in just a few steps whether you are a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery and which method would be appropriate for you.
Prerequisites for laser eye surgery, summarized:
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Stable vision
- Healthy eyes
- Good health
- No pregnancy, no breastfeeding
Stable vision and not pregnant
Until age 18, the body is still growing, and the eyes are not yet fully developed. Vision problems may improve as growth continues or, in the best case, disappear entirely. For this reason, vision correction is only possible from the age of 18.
Vision usually changes very little in adulthood. However, hormonal shifts during pregnancy can cause temporary changes in vision. For this reason, laser eye treatment is not recommended during pregnancy. The same applies during breastfeeding.
In general, your current visual acuity should be stable for at least twelve months before undergoing laser eye treatment. Only then can it be guaranteed that no further treatment will be necessary in the near future and that your eyes will retain their newly regained vision for as long as possible.
Healthy eyes
Healthy eyes are another prerequisite for a successful laser eye correction. Therefore, there should be no diseases of the eye, such as corneal inflammation.
Although our laser eye treatments are minimally invasive, each procedure still places some physical strain. Therefore, overall good health is required.
Eye check: On-site at one of our four locations around Stuttgart
Your health and well-being are our top priority. As part of an individual suitability assessment, our opticians in Leonberg examine your eyes for the following parameters:
- Measurement of visual acuity
- Measurement of the corneal surface, thickness, and elasticity
In addition, a short general medical examination of your eyes will be carried out, followed by a consultation in which we will discuss your individual treatment method and any questions you may have. Allergies to medications that may be administered after the procedure will also be taken into account. Based on these factors, Doctor-medic Liliana-Iulia Bányai and her medical team will determine the treatment method that is most suitable for you.
Conclusion regarding the prerequisites
There are relatively few prerequisites for laser eye surgery. If these are met, the more important question is which treatment method is right.
In our eye laser centre in Karlsruhe or the laser centre in Stuttgart, we offer precise, state-of-the-art treatment methods. Our minimally invasive procedures, SMILE pro and Femto-LASIK, for example, are suitable for correcting refractive errors from -10 to +5 dioptres. In both procedures, a small portion of the cornea is removed so that light is focused again on the point of sharpest vision on the retina (the fovea centralis).
In the case of presbyopia, we also offer the Presbyond procedure, in which one eye is set for distance vision and the other for intermediate and near vision. The brain combines the input from both eyes to produce clear vision at all distances. If the refractive error falls outside this range, a lens implant or lens exchange may be a suitable alternative.
