What to do if your reading glasses are no longer enough?

Are you having trouble reading even with your reading glasses? As people age, many notice that their reading glasses no longer have the desired effect. The text becomes blurry, even at a normal reading distance. What can you do if reading glasses are no longer sufficient? This question is often asked, and the answer depends on the type of vision deterioration and the alternatives available.

When are reading glasses no longer sufficient?

Age-related farsightedness (presbyopia) affects almost everyone beyond a certain age. The eye’s lens gradually loses flexibility over time, making it increasingly difficult to focus on nearby objects.

Many people start using reading glasses at this stage. However, over the years their vision continues to deteriorate, and the glasses that initially helped are no longer sufficient.

In my experience as an ophthalmologist, many patients notice over time that the reading glasses that were perfect a few years ago no longer provide the same level of support. This is because presbyopia progresses and the lens strength once prescribed is no longer sufficient.

Other visual impairments

In many cases it is not just presbyopia that impairs vision. Patients who also have nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism often find that their reading glasses no longer fully correct these additional refractive errors. This creates a double burden, with the glasses failing to provide optimal vision for either near or distance.

How can I tell if my reading glasses are too weak or too strong?

A “wrong” pair of glasses can cause a variety of symptoms. If the reading glasses are too weak, you have to hold the book or newspaper farther from your eyes to see clearly. This often leads to eye pain and fatigue. However, if the glasses are too strong, you may experience headaches, dizziness, and blurred distance vision.

Many of my patients report these problems and initially assume they need new glasses. In fact, regularly updating the prescription is essential to ensure the best possible vision correction.

Can wearing the wrong glasses harm your eyes?

There are many misconceptions about whether wearing the wrong glasses can permanently damage vision. In fact, the wrong glasses can cause short-term unpleasant symptoms such as headaches and eye strain, but they do not cause permanent deterioration of vision.

As an ophthalmologist, I still recommend regular eye examinations to ensure that your glasses or contact lenses are the correct prescription. Wearing the wrong pair of glasses can make everyday activities difficult and significantly reduce your quality of life.

What are the alternatives to reading glasses?

If your reading glasses are too weak or you’d like to be free of glasses, there are several options. Contact lenses are an alternative that doesn’t require surgery, and modern laser procedures can correct vision with a single treatment.

Contact lenses

A popular alternative to reading glasses is contact lenses, especially multifocal lenses that correct both near and distance vision. Patients prefer contact lenses because they provide greater freedom of movement and comfort.

There are different types of contact lenses: soft lenses, which are comfortable and easy to wear, and rigid lenses, which provide sharper vision but require a longer adjustment period.

Laser treatments

Modern laser treatments such as PRESBYOND® or Monovision offer a permanent solution for presbyopia. With PRESBYOND®, the vision in both eyes is modified so the dominant eye is optimized for distance and the non-dominant eye for near vision. This enables clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.

The SMILE Monovision procedure combines the advantages of the proven SMILE technology with the Monovision technique. In this procedure, a small lenticule (lens-shaped tissue disc) is precisely separated from the cornea using a femtosecond laser and removed through a tiny incision. Combined with Monovision, a technique that optimizes the dominant eye for distance and the non-dominant eye for near vision, both presbyopia and other refractive errors can be effectively corrected.

Numerous patients have already benefited from these procedures in my practice – both at the Laser Eye Center in Stuttgart and at the Laser Eye Center in Karlsruhe. The freedom to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses is a major advantage for many. You can read more in the experience report with PRESBYOND®. Hitradio Antenne1 presenter Nico Auer accompanied Thomas during the laser treatment and captured all the emotions. After the operation, Thomas no longer needed glasses.

Lens replacement

If presbyopia is very advanced or laser treatments are not an option, lens replacement may be a viable choice. In this procedure, the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens that remains in the eye permanently.

This method is particularly popular among older patients who want to permanently correct their vision. The artificial lens corrects presbyopia and other refractive errors, such as farsightedness or astigmatism, simultaneously.

Next steps — when reading glasses are no longer enough

If your reading glasses are no longer sufficient, you do not need to be concerned. There are suitable options for correcting your refractive error. If you opt for a permanent correction using a laser, the first step is to determine which method is appropriate for you.

Choosing the right method depends, among other things, on your age, eye health, and overall health. A comprehensive examination is the first step in determining which option is best for you.

You can also take an online laser eye suitability test beforehand to see whether you are a suitable candidate for laser eye treatment.

In my practice, I address my patients’ individual needs and provide detailed guidance so they can make the best possible decision. Many are relieved to learn there are options beyond just reading glasses.

FAQs

Wie oft muss ich die Sehstärke meiner Lesebrille anpassen lassen?

Your vision should be checked every 1–2 years to ensure that your glasses still fit properly.

Sind Laserbehandlungen für jeden geeignet?

Not every refractive error can be corrected with laser surgery. A thorough examination will help determine this. Alternatively, a lens exchange can be performed to achieve a permanent correction.

Ist es schädlich, eine zu schwache oder zu starke Brille zu tragen?

Wearing the wrong glasses can cause short-term headaches and eye strain, but they do not cause permanent damage to the eyes.

Kann man Kontaktlinsen dauerhaft tragen?

Yes, multifocal contact lenses are a good alternative to glasses and can be worn long-term.
