Laser treatment for myopia

Correcting myopia with laser treatment – an overview. Short-sightedness (myopia) is very common. At Bányai Neue Augen, myopia can be successfully corrected.

Laser correction for myopia – correcting nearsightedness with laser treatment

When it comes to laser treatment for myopia, there are several effective correction methods that can significantly improve vision. The most popular options include SMILE® Pro and FEMTO LASIK.

A laser procedure can restore your usual visual acuity, enabling you to see both distance and near clearly — completely without visual aids. If you feel restricted by your glasses or contact lenses, laser eye surgery can improve your quality of life.

Thanks to advanced technology, this operation has become a routine procedure with few risks. Using an excimer or femtosecond laser, the surgeon performs a precise, near-instant correction, and your refractive error can become a thing of the past.

The laser procedure reduces excessive refractive power or compensates for the elongated eyeball typical of myopia, restoring vision. Myopia frequently occurs together with a corneal curvature (astigmatism); even in such cases, laser eye surgery is often possible — see Hornhautverkrümmung lasern.

What is myopia?

Around 1.5 billion people worldwide have myopia. Laser correction of myopia is the most long-lasting method of correction and is very safe today. A myopic eye does not focus incoming light correctly on the retina. The result is blurred distance vision.

Many people, both adults and children, suffer from visual impairments such as myopia. They perceive a blurred image rather than a sharp one. Especially when looking at distant objects, myopic people see a much blurrier image than people with normal vision.

Myopia can have many causes. It is often hereditary and may develop over the course of life. Until it becomes noticeable, myopia can remain undetected in both children and adults.

How does myopia develop?

Myopia can be caused in part by intensive use of the eyes, for example prolonged, concentrated computer work or extended periods of reading.

This strain can cause objects and people in your field of vision to appear increasingly blurred. These are signs that you are becoming myopic: a refractive error develops.

If myopia progresses and interferes with your daily life, you should see an optician or ophthalmologist. Myopia can worsen and develop into high myopia.

High or pronounced myopia can reach up to −12 diopters. Values above −6 diopters are regarded as an anomaly; values beyond this are often classified as a pathological condition.

This consequence of refractive error should be avoided where possible. Myopia can increase the risk of retinal detachment; for this reason, myopic eyes should be examined annually by an ophthalmologist.

In Germany, it is estimated that 25% of the population is affected by myopia.

Myopia laser testimonial

Eye laser testimonial – In the following video you can see Nico Auer from Hitradio antenne1 on his way to a life without glasses. Nico suffers from myopia.

This testimonial shows the entire process from the initial consultation and pre-examination to the laser operation and follow-up checks.

A new feeling of life without glasses and contact lenses awaits you!

How do I know I am nearsighted?

Nearsightedness is primarily recognized by the inability to see distant objects sharply. The field of vision appears blurry and indistinct; a sharp image in the distance is not possible, which indicates myopia.

Myopia is not always the cause of temporary blurred vision. The symptoms of myopia can sometimes be short-lived; often the eye is only fatigued and cannot focus sharply for a while. If the symptoms persist, myopia may be the cause.

If you suspect nearsightedness, consult an ophthalmologist or optician for an eye test. This will determine whether you are nearsighted.

Nico Auer from Hitradio antenne 1, Tara from bigFM, Sanijel Jakimovski, model Anahita Rehbein, and many other well-known faces trust our expertise.

At Bányai Neue Augen, prominent personalities also trust our precise and safe laser eye treatments. Nico Auer of Antenna 1, for example, had laser treatment for his nearsightedness with us – you can share in his delight in his experience report.

Myopia FAQs

What is the procedure of laser eye treatment for nearsightedness?

After making an appointment for a consultation, you come to our practice. During the consultation we will fully explain the possibilities and the advantages and disadvantages of the different laser methods for myopia.

We will then determine your visual acuity and the type of myopia. This allows us to decide which treatment is suitable for you (e.g. SMILE® Pro, Femto-LASIK, or ICL). We will explain in detail how the procedure works and what the possible risks and side effects are.

Our specialists will then draw up a treatment plan and arrange the necessary appointments with you.

What are the benefits of laser treatment for myopia?

The benefits of having your myopia treated with laser are clear: the ongoing costs for glasses and contact lenses are eliminated because they are usually no longer needed after laser treatment. In addition, you can perceive colors and contrasts sharply without corrective aids. One of the biggest advantages is regaining full visual acuity and focusing ability in everyday situations.

How much does laser eye surgery cost for nearsightedness?

Laser eye surgery for myopia starts from €990 per eye. Prices vary depending on the treatment method. We also offer financing. To determine an exact price, it is best to arrange a personal consultation so we can assess the type of myopia, the recommended treatment, and the precise cost. More on this in the article: Short-sightedness laser costs.

Is laser treatment for myopia covered by health insurance?

Statutory health insurance providers generally do not cover the costs of laser eye surgery for myopia. However, this can vary case by case, so we recommend contacting your health insurance provider directly. We also offer financing. For more details, please contact us and we will explain everything.

How many diopters can be lasered?

In principle, laser treatment is possible up to about −10 diopters, although the exact limit always depends on the chosen method and the specific parameters of your cornea. To learn more, please contact us for a personal consultation. Which eyes cannot be lasered?

Are there any risks and side effects when lasering myopia?

There are risks and side effects associated with lasering myopia. Many patients initially experience increased sensitivity to glare or dry eyes. Increased sensitivity usually subsides over time, and dry-eye symptoms can be managed. Blurred vision after surgery is also a possible side effect; usually full vision is restored within three weeks at the latest. For more information, we recommend a personal consultation with our experts.

At what age can I have laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery can be performed at various ages. However, people under 18 are usually not treated because they are still growing and the shape of the eyes and the degree of refractive error can still change. Read more about the recommended age range: up to what age laser eye surgery makes sense.

Can I have my nearsightedness lasered?

Can you laser myopia? Myopia can be treated with laser depending on the type of myopia and the diopter value. To find out whether you are a suitable candidate, please take our laser eye suitability test or arrange a personal consultation.
