Advantages and Disadvantages of PRESBYOND® – An Overview

What are the advantages and disadvantages of PRESBYOND®? This is a question many people ask when they experience worsening vision with age. Presbyopia is very common in people over the age of 45. Our patients report difficulty reading fine print, letters appearing blurred, and nearby objects looking out of focus. Because those affected must constantly strain to focus their eyes, they often develop headaches. Many also have trouble driving, especially in low-light conditions. Nevertheless, presbyopia is not an eye disease but a normal sign of aging.

If you find that your near vision is worse than it used to be, you have several options. Most people initially rely on reading glasses; some use contact lenses. But many soon find glasses inconvenient. Because they don’t have to be worn constantly, people often misplace them, so they’re frequently not at hand when needed. Fortunately, there are methods that make it possible to live without visual aids even in later life. One of these is the PRESBYOND® procedure, whose advantages and disadvantages we will look at in this post.

Laser treatment for presbyopia: Methods and benefits of PRESBYOND®

Presbyopia develops because the lens loses elasticity with age. It can no longer focus on different distances, so that, over time, you can only see clearly at a distance. At our eye center, we specialize in helping people with presbyopia. We use the most modern, gentlest, and safest technology available in this field.

Ways to correct presbyopia include SMILE®, LASIK, PRK, Monovision, and Refractive Lens Exchange. The latest procedure we offer our patients is PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision. It represents a further development of conventional Monovision, offering clear benefits to patients.

Laser treatment for presbyopia is now one of the standard procedures in eye surgery. Doctor-medic Bányai and her team at the Bányai Laser Eye Centre are experts in this field and perform laser treatments daily. Thanks to PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision, our patients can now benefit from the most advanced technique for treating presbyopia.

In PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision, which the Bányai Eye Laser Center performs as one of very few providers in Germany, the dominant eye is adjusted for distance vision, while the non-dominant eye is corrected for both intermediate and near vision. This explains PRESBYOND®’s clear advantage: it makes it easier for the brain to merge the images, allowing sharp vision at all distances. Even reading glasses are no longer necessary.

Monovision and its disadvantage compared with PRESBYOND®

Until now, Monovision has been used to address this issue. In the Monovision procedure, both eyes are optimised for different distances using SMILE®-LASIK or PRK. One eye is set for distance vision, the other for near vision. The disadvantage compared with PRESBYOND® is that it creates a so-called “blur zone” in the intermediate area, where vision remains blurred. With this approach, the brain may have difficulty fusing the two images into a coherent whole.

Disadvantages of PRESBYOND®

The disadvantages of PRESBYOND® include an adjustment period after the procedure. After laser eye surgery, the brain needs time to adapt to the altered visual input — and that takes time.

In addition, the PRESBYOND® procedure is not suitable for everyone. In particular, this method may not be appropriate for people with thin corneas — an ophthalmologist can determine this during the preliminary examination.

In addition to the risks of laser eye surgery, which are low but should still be mentioned, the cost of treating presbyopia with PRESBYOND® can also be a deterrent. However, when you consider the improvement in quality of life and, ideally, the elimination of other visual aids, these costs quickly prove to be a worthwhile investment.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision: For a life without glasses – at any age

To fully realize the benefits of PRESBYOND®, Doctor-medic Bányai uses the Femto-LASIK procedure, which employs the world’s most advanced laser, the VisuMax femtosecond laser from ZEISS. With this gentle method, the risk of injury is eliminated.

How visual impressions are combined varies from person to person, which is why PRESBYOND® is a method individually tailored to each patient. Nevertheless, the PRESBYOND® procedure is fundamentally suitable for anyone with presbyopia who wants a life without glasses. We will be happy to determine whether the procedure is suitable for you in a personal consultation. Contact us at any time, and we will provide you with comprehensive information about our laser treatment methods.
