Which foods are good for eye health in old age? Doctor-medic Bányai informs

Certain nutrients and foods help protect the eyes and strengthen vision. But which foods are particularly good for eye health? In this article, you will learn which foods are especially beneficial for the eyes in older age.

Why you should pay even more attention to your eyes as you age

As we age, not only does our general physical health change, but so does that of our eyes. Aging affects the eye’s lens, the ciliary muscle, and the retina, which can lead to a deterioration of vision.

Diseases such as cataract (Katarakt), macular degeneration (loss of central vision), and glaucoma (green star) occur more frequently and significantly impair vision.

Presbyopia also becomes noticeable in many people from the age of 40, as the lens loses its elasticity.

Regular eye examinations are therefore becoming increasingly important to detect and treat vision problems at an early stage. Many eye conditions progress unnoticed and can cause permanent damage if not diagnosed in time.

In addition, the combination of aging and unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking or a poor diet, can place further strain on the eyes.

Conversely, it also means that we have options for preventing certain eye diseases that should be understood and applied. An important aspect of this is diet, which will be discussed in the following section.

Healthy nutrition for healthy eyes – we eat with our eyes

Certain nutrients and foods are considered particularly beneficial for eye health. Vitamin A, for example, is essential for night vision and for protecting the cornea.

It is primarily found in foods such as carrots, spinach, and cabbage. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel, support retinal health and help prevent dry eyes.

Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E help protect eye cells from oxidative stress and harmful environmental factors. These vitamins are found in citrus fruits, peppers, nuts, and seeds.

Lutein and zeaxanthin, which are found in kale, broccoli, and corn, act as a natural sunscreen and protect the eye’s lens from UV radiation.

List of foods that may promote eye health:

  • Bell pepper
  • Carrots
  • Beetroot
  • Broccoli
  • Lamb’s lettuce
  • Citrus fruits
  • Spinach
  • Peas
  • Kale

Dietary supplements for better vision?

Patients in my practice frequently ask which foods and supplements they should take to improve their vision. Unfortunately, I always have to temper their expectations a little.

A deficiency in certain nutrients can negatively affect eye health and should be corrected.

However, if all necessary nutrients are already present in sufficient amounts (for example, because someone follows a healthy diet and has no preexisting conditions), an excess of these substances will not improve vision.

How else can you support eye health?

In addition to nutrition, other factors also play an important role in eye health. Quitting smoking is one of the most effective measures to reduce the risk of eye diseases, as smoking impairs blood flow to the eyes and increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Regular exercise, on the other hand, improves blood circulation, so being physically active can also contribute to eye health.
Regular eye examinations help detect changes in vision early and enable timely treatment.

Protecting the eyes from harmful UV radiation by wearing sunglasses with UV protection is also important, since excessive sun exposure can damage them. It’s advisable to take regular breaks from screens and to prevent the eye surface from drying out by staying well hydrated.

When natural vision declines: laser eye surgery as a modern solution

If, despite all these measures, visual problems such as presbyopia, nearsightedness, or farsightedness develop, a precisely performed laser treatment can restore your quality of life. In our laser eye centres in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, we offer individual consultations and work with you to find the right treatment – gentle, safe, and tailored to your needs.
