How long does laser eye treatment for long-sightedness last? Doctor-medic Bányai explains
Laser eye surgery for farsightedness (hyperopia) is a popular method for managing refractive errors permanently. But how lasting is the result really? While it is impossible to give a one-size-fits-all answer, there is good news: for many patients, the effects of laser eye surgery for farsightedness last nearly a lifetime.
However, this is not always the case. In some patients, a refractive error may reoccur after some time, requiring further correction—either through a second procedure or the use of visual aids.
Laser Treatment for Farsightedness: An Overview of Methods
There is more than one way to treat farsightedness with a laser. One of the most well-known is Femto-LASIK. In this procedure, a laser creates a thin incision in the cornea to form a “flap,” which is then folded back. A second laser then reshapes the underlying tissue so that light is refracted correctly, compensating for the farsightedness.
For age-related farsightedness (presbyopia), methods like the PRESBYOND® procedure are used. In this case, one eye is corrected for near vision and the other for distance vision. The brain then combines these two different visual impressions into one sharp image.
Another alternative is Lens Replacement: The cornea is opened to remove the natural lens and replace it with an artificial one. While this is not “laser surgery” in the traditional sense, it offers an effective alternative for people who are not candidates for standard laser treatment.
Why is a Follow-up Correction Sometimes Necessary?
Even if the initial surgery was successful, there are reasons why vision might change later on. Two of the most important causes are a shift in prescription over time and the onset of presbyopia.
1. Changes in the Degree of Farsightedness
If the diopter value changes after the procedure, symptoms of blurred vision may return. Farsightedness occurs because the eyeball is too short, causing light to focus behind the retina. Since the eye can still change—especially in younger years—surgeons recommend waiting until the age of 18 and ensuring the prescription is stable before operating. However, minor changes can still occur later in life.
2. Presbyopia as a Possible Cause
Age-related farsightedness (presbyopia) affects approximately 80% of the European population at some point. Symptoms usually start around age 40, such as needing reading glasses. This is caused by the natural loss of elasticity in the eye’s lens and a weakening of the ciliary muscle, which is responsible for focusing between near and far objects.
Methods for Follow-up Correction
If the effects of the initial surgery are no longer satisfactory, several measures can be taken:
- Visual Aids: Returning to contact lenses or glasses for specific situations.
- Secondary Laser Treatment: If the first procedure was a Femto-LASIK, it can often be repeated. This is also possible in rare cases of over- or under-correction.
- Specialized Procedures: For presbyopia, we offer the PRESBYOND® method, Monovision, PRK, or refractive lens exchange.
Which method is best depends on the individual patient and is determined during a comprehensive examination at our specialized centers in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart.
How Often Can Farsightedness Be Re-treated?
Re-treatment via Femto-LASIK is possible as long as the condition of the eyes permits it—specifically the thickness of the cornea. With normal corneal thickness, laser surgery can be performed multiple times. If laser treatment is no longer an option, lens surgery (implanting artificial lenses) remains a highly effective alternative.
Conclusion: How Long Does the Result Last?

The longevity of laser treatment for farsightedness depends on many factors. However, for most patients, a daily life without visual aids is possible for many years after the procedure. Even if vision weakens again, modern ophthalmology offers numerous ways to treat it and restore clear sight.
