Laser treatment for short-sightedness
“I see blurry in the distance.”
A laser treatment for short-sightedness enables you to see both far and near clearly again. Laser eye surgery corrects the eye’s excessive refractive power.
Laser treatment for long-sightedness
“I see things up close blurry.”
With an eye laser treatment for long-sightedness, you can avoid wearing glasses or contact lenses. You can also see nearby objects sharply again.
Laser treatment for corneal curvature
“I see everything slightly distorted.”
With an eye laser method for corneal curvature, the cornea is corrected. The cornea then functions as it should.
Laser treatment for presbyopia
“I see increasingly worse.”
The eye’s refractive power is corrected with an eye laser method for presbyopia. The eye can again see both near and distant objects clearly without the need for reading glasses.

Laser eye procedure and experience report
In the following video you can see an experience report by Nico Auer from Hitradio Antenne 1. Nico suffers from short-sightedness. Accompany him on his way to a life without glasses.
Nico reports on his personal experience with laser eye surgery. He shows the entire process from the initial consultation and pre-examination to the laser eye operation and follow-up checks.
Arrange a personal appointment at one of our locations. This is the first step to a new way of life without glasses and contact lenses!
What advantages does laser eye surgery have over glasses and contact lenses?
Do you dream of living without your glasses in everyday life? Seeing everything colourful and sharp without contact lenses?
Glasses and contact lenses are only temporary solutions. When the visual aid is removed, vision is usually significantly reduced. Laser eye surgery is a permanent solution.
First, the type of refractive error is determined. Are you short-sighted, long-sighted, or do you have corneal curvature (astigmatism)? After this assessment we determine your diopter value and select the appropriate method and procedure.
For all of this, it is best to arrange a consultation at one of our locations. Our experienced staff will inform and advise you on the next steps.
Requirements – When is laser eye surgery possible?
Are you suitable for laser eye surgery? Are you already planning to have your eyes lasered? Try our quick eye laser test. This lets you check the prerequisites for laser eye surgery. Within 2 minutes you can see, based on your condition, diopters, age, etc., whether you are suitable for laser eye surgery.
If your test result is negative, please consult our ophthalmology practice in person. There are other alternatives to laser eye surgery, such as implantation of an artificial lens (trifocal or multifocal lenses). Such intraocular lenses are excellent solutions for correcting high refractive errors. A lens replacement can also be used for myopia or astigmatism, especially if corneal thickness is not sufficient for laser procedures.
Laser eye aptitude test
Want to get rid of your glasses or contact lenses? Laser eye treatment can free you from visual aids long-term. However, not all refractive errors can be treated with laser. We will help you find out whether your refractive error can be corrected with a laser.
With the laser eye aptitude test you can find out within 2 minutes whether you are suitable for laser eye treatment.

FAQs Eye lasers
Up to how many dioptres can you have your eyes lasered?
Thanks to the modern laser eye techniques at Bányai Neue Augen, even high dioptric values can be treated. With current methods, almost all refractive errors can be corrected by laser. Alternatively, a lens replacement can provide the desired solution. You are welcome to take our aptitude test, where you can enter your refractive error and diopter values. Read more: Up to how many dioptres is laser eye surgery possible?
Is laser eye surgery possible despite corneal curvature?
Many sufferers of corneal curvature or very thin corneas ask whether eye lasering is possible. If you have a very thin cornea, the PRK/LASEK method may offer a treatment option. The examination at the ophthalmologist determines whether laser eye surgery is ultimately an option. If the cornea is too thin, laser eye surgery cannot be performed. As an alternative, surgical lens replacement is used for very thin corneas. Read more: Eye lasers for thin cornea
Laser eye treatment steps
In laser eye surgery, the laser changes the refractive power of the eye. The retina then produces a sharp image again. A visual aid is no longer necessary after the operation. This small procedure takes only a few minutes and is computer-controlled. Nevertheless, with preparation and follow-up it amounts to around two hours.
LASIK & Femto LASIK differences
- LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis and is also called flap surgery. In the LASIK method, the wafer-thin corneal lamella is created using a microkeratome — a highly developed, computer-controlled microscalpel that prepares the flap and thus the top layer of the cornea.
- In the Femto LASIK method, the flap is created with the femtosecond laser.
- In both methods the flap is then lifted and the refractive correction is performed with an excimer laser. Once the laser treatment is complete, the flap is repositioned and the healing process begins. The flap heals on its own and is not noticeable.
The SMILE® Pro laser treatment
- In addition to Femto LASIK, SMILE® Pro is another effective and frequently used treatment for vision correction without preparing a corneal lamella (flap). It is used depending on the type and degree of refractive error. SMILE® Pro is often used for higher diopter values, including short-sightedness.
- During the procedure, the laser creates a refractive lenticule and a small access incision of approximately 4 mm.
- The lenticule is removed through the small incision.
- Removal of the lenticule results in a targeted reshaping of the corneal tissue.
Advanced PRK & LASEK
- A-PRK (Advanced Photorefractive Keratectomy) and LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) are suitable for people with a thin cornea. Both techniques treat the corneal surface and use an excimer laser to remove corneal layers.
What is the procedure before and on the day of the laser eye treatment?
Before laser eye treatment, a thorough preliminary examination must be performed by the treating physician. You will first be informed about the exact procedure and potential risks. This is followed by extensive measurements to diagnose your eyes and determine the visual impairment (eyeball measurement – biometry, pupillometry, pachymetry, wavefront measurement, refraction determination, IOL Master). The ophthalmologist will determine the best treatment approach for you. Nevertheless, please note the following:
- Contact lenses: pause wearing soft contact lenses 2 weeks before the appointment (3–4 weeks for rigid gas-permeable lenses)
- The preliminary examination for laser eye surgery takes about 2 hours.
- You must not drive yourself after the examination due to the use of eye drops.
On the day of the laser operation: During laser eye surgery, the laser changes the refractive power of the eye. The retina then produces a sharp image again. A visual aid is no longer necessary after the operation. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes and is computer-controlled. With preparation and follow-up, expect around two hours. You should plan for several hours of rest at home after the procedure.

What should be considered after laser eye treatment?
After the laser treatment we will examine you again after a short rest. Even at this stage you should notice an improvement in your vision. However, full visual acuity is not immediate. Please have someone accompany you home so you can relax and recover.
It is normal for your eyes to burn a little, itch, or feel like there is a foreign body. This should subside three to four hours after the procedure. During this time your visual acuity will improve. By the next day you should notice a clear difference. During healing, avoid activities such as reading or watching TV to let your eyes regenerate.
The necessary recovery time after laser eye surgery varies by person, but generally only a few hours are required. Be patient. Do not rub your eyes during this period.

Treatment results for laser eye surgery under 45
SMILE® Pro treatment results
With the SMILE® Pro method, results can be achieved both very quickly and gently. It can provide a long-lasting correction of visual impairments with low risk. For example, flap displacement is excluded because no flap is created. The minimally invasive, gentle procedure allows a fast recovery so patients can quickly resume daily life without visual aids. Optimization to exactly 0 diopters cannot be guaranteed for every eye — SMILE Pro achieves an average of 0.07 diopters per eye, approaching near perfection. In most cases, the need for contact lenses or glasses is permanently eliminated after SMILE Pro treatment.

Alternatives to laser eye surgery under 45
As an alternative to laser eye surgery, ICL lens implants can be used. These are permanent contact lens implants placed in addition to your natural lens, positioned between the iris and the natural lens. This implant can permanently correct vision defects and can be removed if necessary. ICL stands for implantable collamer lens and can be used for short- and long-sightedness. The principle is similar to cataract surgery, where the clouded natural lens is replaced by a new one.
How long does the eye laser last?
In principle, laser eye surgery lasts a lifetime. However, in younger patients whose eyes are still growing, changes can occur over time. These are usually small and can be corrected with a simple follow-up treatment. Read more: Long-term consequences after laser eye surgery
What side effects can occur with eye lasers?
Thanks to high technical standards, the expertise of our trained specialists and strict hygiene measures, the risk of side effects is minimised. Side effects vary by method and type of refractive error. Each patient’s eyes are different, so no blanket statement can be made. For example, corneal surface condition and corneal thickness differ between individuals. Immediately after treatment, mild burning is common. A foreign-body sensation in the first hours is normal. Eyes are initially light-sensitive and may produce more tears. These symptoms usually subside over the course of about 2 weeks. Complete corneal healing may take up to 3 weeks, during which vision can fluctuate. The tear film typically normalises within 3 months. Attend all follow-up appointments even if you have no complaints.
How often can you re-laser?
How often re-lasing is possible depends on corneal thickness. Eyes with a normal, average corneal thickness can be re-lasered multiple times, although this is rarely necessary.
What is the worst thing that can happen with laser eye surgery?
The “worst” potential complication is a very rare, non-specific immunological reaction triggered by an infection from glove powder, contaminated instruments or lubricants. This is extremely rare.
How safe is laser eye surgery and from what age?
With the right surgeon, laser eye surgery is a very safe procedure. This type of treatment has been performed and continuously improved for over 20 years. This is reflected in the high success rate of German laser eye centres of over 90%. The minimum age for laser eye surgery is 18 years. Read more: Is laser eye surgery safe? and From what age is laser eye surgery recommended?
Is it possible to become blind from eye lasers?
No, you cannot become blind from laser eye surgery. This is a myth. The laser only acts on the corneal layers, so injury to the retina, optic nerve or lens is not possible.
Is laser treatment of the eye painful?
No, laser treatment of the eye is not painful. Before surgery the eye is numbed with eye drops. The anaesthetic takes effect within seconds and then the treatment begins. More on this in the article: How painful is laser eye surgery?
How long does blurred vision last after laser surgery?
After laser surgery you may experience blurred vision for up to 3 weeks; if blurring persists beyond that, a revision may be necessary. During follow-up visits your eyesight will be monitored over several weeks or months. Read more: Blurred vision after laser eye surgery
