How soon can you fly after laser eye surgery?
If you are planning a trip shortly after your procedure, it is important to know whether flying is safe after an intervention like laser eye surgery or cataract surgery.
For millions of people suffering from refractive errors, laser vision correction is a life-changing solution. The prospect of seeing clearly without the hassle of glasses or contacts is exciting—especially when you have travel plans. However, to ensure a successful and stress-free recovery, you must keep the healing process in mind. In this post, we’ll explain how soon you can take to the skies after your surgery.
General Guidelines for Flying After Surgery
Before diving into the specifics, it is important to note that recovery is unique to every patient. While most people recover quickly with minimal discomfort, everyone’s experience differs.
As a general rule, you should refrain from flying for 24 hours to one week after your procedure. This is primarily because changes in cabin air pressure during takeoff and landing can cause discomfort or dryness in the eyes.
Flying After Eye Surgery: Try to Avoid Travel in the First Week
If you must fly within a week of your treatment, we strongly recommend discussing your plans with your surgeon beforehand. Your surgeon can determine if you are a candidate for methods with faster recovery times, such as SMILE® Pro or LASIK.
If your surgeon clears you for travel, please observe all necessary post-operative precautions, including:
- Strict Adherence to Eye Drops: The dry air in airplanes makes lubrication essential.
- Sun Protection: Wear sunglasses in bright light.
- Hands Off: Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.
- Activities to Avoid: Remember to skip the sauna, solarium, and swimming pool for the first few weeks (approx. 3 to 4 weeks for LASIK).
The Healing Process
Recovery times vary. Following your surgeon’s instructions is the most important factor for a smooth experience. Minor side effects, such as dry eyes, are common in the early stages but are typically temporary.
If a short period on the ground doesn’t deter you from achieving perfect vision, we invite you to schedule a consultation at our centers in Stuttgart or Karlsruhe to find out if you are a candidate for laser eye surgery.
