What is presbyopia?

With increasing age, vision declines. A natural aging process begins and the eye’s lens hardens. This occurs in most people from around age 35, when the condition known as presbyopia starts. This is mainly due to the eye’s diminishing ability to accommodate.

Accommodation is the ability of the eye’s elastic lens to change, using muscle power, so that near and distant objects can be seen sharply. This active change alters the refraction of light. With age, the lens becomes progressively stiffer, the eye muscles weaken, and the lens can no longer form a sufficiently spherical shape. As a result, affected individuals can no longer see clearly up close.

When do you need reading glasses?

Presbyopia is a gradual process. At first you may not notice anything, but eventually reading small print becomes tiring. Constant strain on the eye muscles can cause headaches. Before long, you may even find that you can no longer switch to near vision.

In most cases, affected individuals try to hold the reading material farther away, which certainly shouldn’t be a permanent situation. Reading glasses can often help with this. The so-called “single-vision” glasses — which are usually made for a specific distance — are therefore suitable only for reading at close range. They are completely unsuitable for distance vision. This is particularly problematic for people with additional nearsightedness (myopia).

It involves many compromises that can create significant obstacles in everyday life. Constantly having to switch between two different pairs of glasses can be frustrating. Using so-called progressive glasses, which can correct several vision problems in a single pair, also requires skill and patience. In addition, buying a good pair of progressive glasses is expensive and requires professional fitting by a trained optician.

Laser eye surgery for presbyopia with PRESBYOND®

This specialized laser method always takes the unique “blend zone” into account and can precisely optimize it based on the individual, calculated ablation profiles.

In the so-called “mixing zone,” distance and near vision merge into a seamless whole. This zone ensures that the brain can integrate the different visual impressions and provides good vision in both eyes.

Thus, the PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is a real alternative for correcting presbyopia and restores a measure of quality of life to those affected. The laser treatment is also minimally invasive, making it one of the most well-tolerated treatment methods for presbyopia.
