Laser eye surgery FAQs
Thanks to the modern laser eye techniques at Bányai Neue Augen, even high dioptric values can be treated. With today’s status, almost all refractive errors can be corrected by means of a laser. Alternatively, a lens replacement can help to achieve the desired solution. You are welcome to take our aptitude test, where you can enter your refractive error and dioptric values. Laser eye surgery is a very safe procedure with the right doctor. Because this type of eye treatment has been carried out and constantly improved for over 20 years. This is also confirmed by the very high success rate of German laser eye centers of over 90%. The minimum age for laser eye surgery is 18 years. Many sufferers of a corneal curvature and very thin cornea ask themselves whether eye lasering is even possible? If you suffer from a very thin cornea, the PRK/LASEK method may offer a treatment option. The examination at the ophthalmologist shows whether laser eye surgery is ultimately an option. If the cornea is too thin, laser eye surgery cannot be performed. As an alternative, surgical lens replacement will be performed on a very thin cornea. Read more: Eye lasers for thin cornea
In eye lasers, the laser changes the refractive power of the eye. The retina thus produces a sharp image again. A visual aid is no longer necessary after the eye operation. This small procedure only takes a few minutes and is computer-controlled. Nevertheless, you will get around two hours by means of preparation and follow-up examination.
LASIK-OP & Femto LASIK differences
- LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis or is also referred to as flap surgery. In the LASIK method, the wafer-thin corneal lamella is produced by means of a microkeratome. This is a highly developed, computer-controlled microscalpel that prepares the flap and thus the top layer of the cornea.
- In the Femto Lasik method, the flap is generated with the femtosecond laser.
- Subsequently, the flap is opened in both methods and the correction of the defective vision is carried out with an eye laser. Once the treatment with the laser is completed, the flap is closed again and the healing process starts. The flap grows back on its own and is not noticeable.
The laser treatment with SMILE® Pro method
- In addition to the Femto Lasik treatment (femtosecond laser), SMILE® Pro is another effective and often used treatment form for eye correction without preparing the corneal lamella (flap). It is used depending on the form of refractive error, with the degree also playing a role. The SMILE® Pro eye laser is used especially for higher diopter numbers, including nearsightedness.
- The laser creates a refractive lens (lenticule) and a small approximately 4 mm access (incision) during eye laser surgery.
- The lenticle is removed through the small access.
- The extractions result in a targeted change in the corneal tissue.
Advanced PRK & LASEK
- A-PRK (Advanced Photorefractive Keratectomy) and LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is suitable for people with a thin cornea of the eye. Both techniques involve a treatment of the corneal surface. The excimer laser is used here to remove the corneal layers.
Before undergoing laser eye treatment, a thorough preliminary examination must be carried out by the attending physician. First and foremost, you will be informed about the exact procedure of the laser eye treatment and potential risks. This is followed by an extensive measurement to diagnose your eyes and determine visual impairment (measurement of the eyeball – biometry, pupillometry, pachymetry, wavefront measurement, refraction determination, IOL master). The ophthalmologist will also determine the best course of treatment for you. Nevertheless, they should note the following things:
- Contact lenses: pause soft contact lenses 2 weeks before the appointment (3-4 weeks for dimensionally stable contact lenses)
- The preliminary examination for laser eye surgery takes about 2 hours.
- You must not drive yourself after the examination due to the use of eye drops.
On the day of laser surgery: During eye laser surgery, the laser changes the refractive power of the eye. The retina thus produces a sharp image again. A visual aid is no longer necessary after the eye operation. This small procedure only takes a few minutes and is computer-controlled. Nevertheless, you will get around two hours by means of preparation and follow-up examination. You should definitely plan for a few hours of rest at home after your laser eye surgery.

How long are no contact lenses before laser eye surgery?
After the treatment with the eye laser, we will examine you again after a short rest. Even at this stage, you should notice an improvement in your vision through laser eye surgery. However, full vision is not yet immediately available. Therefore, let an escort take you home to relax and recuperate.
First of all, it is completely normal for your eyes to burn, itch or feel a foreign body. This should subside three to four hours after laser eye surgery. In this course, your eyesight also increases. By the next day at the latest, you will see the clear difference. You should refrain from activities such as reading or watching television during the healing process. Let your eyes regenerate and come to rest.
How long rest is really necessary after laser eye surgery varies from person to person. In general, however, the process only takes a few hours, so be patient. You should also never rub your eyes during this time.

What does the follow-up check look like?
- Whether you suffer from discomfort after treatment or not, careful follow-up examinations are always of the utmost importance. We ask you to always comply with these. Only through this form of examination can we be completely sure that your eyes heal perfectly.
- In der Regel finden die Nachuntersuchungen in folgenden Abständen statt:
- 1 day after treatment
- after 1 week
- after 3 months
SMILE® Pro treatment results
With the SMILE® Pro method, results can not only be achieved very quickly and gently. Rather, it can be used to achieve permanent correction of visual impairments – with little risk. For example, slipping of the flap is excluded for a simple reason: no one is needed. The minimally invasive, extremely gentle procedure allows for a fast healing time, so that patients can quickly start their daily lives without vision aids. However, optimisation of visual acuity to exactly 0 diopters with the SMILE Pro method cannot be guaranteed in the human eye – but it achieves almost perfection with an average value of 0.07 diopters per eye. A visual aid in the form of contact lenses or glasses can usually be permanently dispensed with after treatment with SMILE Pro.

Experiences with eye lasers
Are there any negative experiences with eye lasers?
The “worst” thing that can happen with laser eye surgery is a very rare, non-specific immunological reaction. This is triggered by an infection due to glove powder, contaminated instruments or lubricants. However, this is very rare.
Ophthalmologist Ms. Doctor-medic Bányai and her experienced team perform over 3,000 eye surgeries per year themselves. She is one of the top specialists in her field of laser eye treatment.
In addition, the technical equipment in our laser centres in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe is up to date. We offer the world’s most modern and gentle eye laser methods. We also offer a remedy for vision problems and dry eyes.
