Laser eye surgery experience in Germany – video diary

In Germany, around 120,000 people a year opt for laser eye surgery. Among them is also Hitradio antenne1 morning show traffic editor, Nico Auer. His story is not just one of many, but one that shows why laser eye surgery can be the right choice for many.

Nico had been living with glasses for more than 20 years due to myopia. However, this is especially annoying in winter due to the foggy glasses. Recently, he has also had difficulty wearing the mask in combination with the glasses.

For some time now, his thoughts have revolved around the topic of eye lasers and the associated benefits of treatment. The desire for a life without vision aids became stronger and stronger, and finally the dream became more and more a reality month after month. He opted for treatment at the Bányai clinic in Leonberg, where he got rid of his diopters and gained a new attitude to life.

Nico reports on his experience with eye lasers in the 3-part video series. From the first visit to the Bányai Clinic in Leonberg to new weeks of joie de vivre without glasses, interesting minutes full of insights await you!

Consultation and preliminary examination – Part 1 of the experience report on laser eye surgery

First of all, Nico’s eyes are literally examined in the eye laser centre Bányai in Leonberg during the preliminary examinations. Various tests measure whether Nico’s eyes are suitable for laser surgery.

Criteria include the thickness and elasticity of the cornea. The level of intraocular pressure is also measured. It turns out that for Nico’s eyes, the ReLEx-Smile method is best suited. Other methods for laser eye surgery are the LASIK method, PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision, Advanced PRK and LASEK.

Laser Eye Surgery Day – Part 2 of the Laser Eye Experience

“Bye, bye glasses” – today is Nico’s big day. After a final check of vision, he is informed about the drip plan and can ask open questions to the top doctors. After a detailed conversation about the upcoming steps, he is finally allowed to take the big step.

It goes into the OR, where Ms. Doctor-medic Bányai, as discussed, performs the ReLEx smile method. You can see in the second part of the video series how Nico fares after eye lasers.

One week after laser eye surgery – Part 3 of the review

“Totally euphoric” and “a different attitude to life” – with these words Nico describes his “new” life without glasses. He is already symptom-free 20 hours after the operation. He does not complain of dry eyes, burning eyes or other problems or pain.

Overnight, Nico is recommended an eye patch or eye protection, as he sleeps rather restlessly. In the morning after the eye laser, Nico can take off his eye protection. A protection is glued to each eye to protect the eyes at night.

Nico is obviously very much looking forward to the first result, as is probably the case with most patients. His reaction to the “new” eyes definitely conveys how amazed and happy he is about the result.

Two days after the procedure, sport is allowed again and Nico jogs a lap. “No fogged-up glasses, it’s really a completely different running feeling, a completely different way of life. I’m totally euphoric! I never thought that after such a short time there would be a really good result…”, Nico enthuses after his training.

One week after the procedure, Nico can have his result checked in practice. He is amazed at how his vision has improved and how little time has passed since he wore glasses. The eye drops that he has to use daily ensure that everything heals.

In the video part 3, you will learn what the optician master, Ms. Biggy Stecher, has to say about Nico’s eyes at the inspection appointment a week later. That is to say, the laser eye surgery will remedy your refractive error.

What refractive errors can I laser?

65 percent of Germans, i.e. about two out of three, are affected by refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or presbyopia. These refractive errors are usually not perceived as pleasant, on the contrary. Especially people who are more miserable often suffer from poor vision.

In order to be able to see clearly, those affected must wear glasses or contact lenses with the appropriate diopters, sometimes soothing drops for the eyes are additionally required. Since the number of dioptres can change over the course of a lifetime, this leads to high costs for the right visual aid in the long term. However, for many refractive errors, there is already a simpler, permanent solution for correcting the refractive error: to have the eye lasered.

For which defective vision is refractive surgery, i.e. laser eye surgery, suitable?

  • Laser treatment for short-sightedness (myopia)
  • Laser treatment for long-sightedness (hyperopia)
  • Laser presbyopia (presbyopia)
  • Corneal curvature lasers (astigmatism or intentionality)
  • Refractive error of higher order (aberrations)

Various eye laser methods, such as femto-lasics, the ReLeX smile method and PRK/LASEK, can be used to correct defective vision, such as short-, far-sightedness and stick-sightedness.

Are you interested in laser eye surgery? Then you can find out here whether you are suitable for laser eye treatment using an online eye laser aptitude test. Different factors, such as too thin a cornea, can make laser eye treatment difficult.

What eye disease can I laser?

Eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration or retinal detachment occur in various areas of the eye.

Some develop quickly and at a young age, others only appear at an older age. Regardless of the eye disease, early diagnosis and proper treatment is important.

With the help of the LENSAR femtosecond laser, a gentle cataract operation can be performed.

In addition, we will inform you about the individual treatment options for macular degeneration, glaucoma or pathologically dry eye in a personal consultation at one of our 5 practice locations.

Lasers can be used to get rid of the following eye diseases:

  • Cataract lasers
  • Secondary cataract
  • Green cataract lasers (glaucoma)
  • Age-dependent macular degeneration lasers (AMD)
  • Laser retinal hole & retinal detachment
  • Laser treatment for keratoconus

So that the eye diseases do not progress further, it is important to discuss monitoring appointments, preventive examinations and treatment options with the ophthalmologist.
