For the first time in Stuttgart – SMILE® pro replaces ReLEx® SMILE
Anyone who has ever considered laser vision correction has likely come across the ReLEx® SMILE method. It is one of the most advanced laser treatments for nearsightedness and astigmatism. However, rapid developments in ophthalmology never stop, and some specialists are already offering the next evolution: the SMILE® pro procedure.
As a leading expert in laser eye surgery in Stuttgart, Doctor-medic Liliana Bányai is the first to perform the SMILE® pro procedure at her laser center. While the surgical steps remain similar, the use of next-generation laser technology represents a significant leap forward for patients.
Comparing ReLEx® SMILE and SMILE® pro
SMILE® pro is not a completely new surgical method but rather a sophisticated evolution of the proven SMILE® procedure. Compared to LASIK or Femto-LASIK, it is significantly gentler and is frequently used to treat myopia and astigmatism.
In the SMILE process (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction), the cornea does not need to be fully opened and folded back (no “corneal flap”). Instead, only a tiny incision is made in the cornea. Through this, a so-called lenticule—a thin disc shaped precisely to correct the specific refractive error—is removed.
Doctor-medic Bányai introduced ReLEx® SMILE years ago as an especially gentle method. Now, as the first surgeon in Stuttgart to offer SMILE® pro, she highlights the benefits of this innovation: “Unlike the conventional ReLEx® SMILE method, the laser process in SMILE® pro is even more precise and faster—typically taking less than ten seconds. Additionally, the incision is extremely small at only two to three millimeters, which is a major advantage for eye surgery.” This short incision promotes even faster healing with fewer complications.
ZEISS VISUMAX® 800: High-Tech “Made in Germany
These advanced SMILE® pro treatments are made possible by the latest laser technology from ZEISS. With the VISUMAX® 800, Doctor-medic Bányai relies on cutting-edge high-tech made in Germany.
The ZEISS VISUMAX® 800 is among the most advanced femtosecond lasers in the world. The computer-aided system allows for exact tracking of eye alignment and gives the surgeon greater control during the treatment.
The innovations of the VISUMAX laser don’t just benefit the surgeon; they primarily offer a higher level of comfort and safety for the patient. In addition to a more patient-friendly setup, the short surgical duration significantly reduces stress.
As Doctor-medic Bányai explains: “We are currently experiencing enormous technical leaps in laser eye technology—with the latest ZEISS laser as the prime example. It is vital for us as ophthalmologists to stay at the forefront of innovation to provide even patients with complex cases with modern, safe treatment.”
