Which eyes cannot be treated with laser? Doctor-medic Bányai explains

Not all eyes are suitable for laser treatment. If you have unstable vision values or severe eye conditions such as keratoconus, laser surgery is generally not recommended. Additionally, for patients with particularly thin corneas or extreme refractive errors, laser treatment may not be possible. However, there are excellent long-term alternatives available to correct your vision.

Below, we inform you about the essential requirements for laser eye surgery, when the procedure is not advisable, and which alternatives might be right for you.

Which Conditions Make a Patient Unsuitable for Laser Surgery?

Several factors can exclude a patient from being a candidate for laser eye treatment:

  • Unstable Eye Conditions: Progressive eye diseases, acute infections, or recent ocular trauma may make surgery unsafe.
  • Severe Eye Diseases: Conditions such as keratoconus, advanced cataracts, or glaucoma can make laser treatment either impossible or too risky.
  • Thin Cornea: A cornea that lacks sufficient thickness increases the risk of post-operative complications.
  • High Refractive Errors: In cases of extreme myopia or hyperopia, it can be difficult to achieve full correction via laser alone.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Hormonal changes during this time can affect vision. It is recommended to wait until after breastfeeding before undergoing a procedure.

A thorough examination by a specialist is vital. At our clinics, we analyze your eye health and general medical history to determine the safest path forward.

Alternatives to Laser Eye Surgery

If laser treatment is not an option, lens-based surgery often provides a successful solution.

  • Lens Replacement: If conditions like cataracts, keratoconus, or glaucoma prevent lasering, a surgical lens exchange can achieve the desired visual results.
  • Thin Corneas: Even with a thin cornea, an operative lens implant (such as an ICL) can provide long-term visual clarity.
  • Waiting Period: For pregnant or breastfeeding women, we recommend sticking with glasses or contacts temporarily and scheduling the surgery once hormone levels have stabilized.

Key Requirements for a Successful Procedure

To ensure that laser eye surgery is both safe and effective, the following criteria should be met:

  1. Stable Prescription: Your vision values should have remained stable for at least the past 12 months.
  2. Adult Age: You must be at least 18 years old. However, we often recommend waiting until age 22, as vision can still develop and change until that point.
  3. General Health: You should be in good physical and mental health, free from chronic infections or conditions that could impair the healing process.
