Are there any negative experiences with eye lasers? Dr. med. Bányai explains
Many people ask themselves before laser eye surgery: Can the procedure go wrong? Which complaints are possible afterwards? And how do I know I need medical attention?
The short answer: As with any medical procedure, there are risks. Transient complaints such as dry eyes, photosensitivity or halos in night vision are common. Serious complications are rare, but cannot be completely ruled out. Whether a treatment is suitable is only decided after a thorough preliminary examination.
This article was written under the professional classification of Dr. med. Daniel Bányai. He gives an overview, but does not replace a personal consultation and no examination by an ophthalmologist.
Negative experiences before laser eye surgery: fear and insecurity
Fear of laser eye surgery is normal. Many people worry about pain, the treatment on the eye or the result. A detailed consultation can reduce this uncertainty. Among other things, the defective vision, the cornea, the tear film quality and personal expectations are examined.
The decision also includes the question of whether the desired vision correction is realistic. Not every person is suitable for every procedure. If the preliminary examination speaks against an intervention, the result should be accepted. A serious consultation does not promise a specific visual performance, but explains opportunities, limits and alternatives.

What can happen during treatment?
Depending on the findings, different procedures can be used for eye lasers, for example femto-LASIK, PRK, Trans-PRK or smile® Pro (further development of the ReLEx SMILE). Treatment is usually with numbing eye drops. Nevertheless, pressure, light or an unfamiliar feeling can be stressful.
Possible risks during or immediately after the procedure include:
- non-optimal planning or correction of defective vision
- an undercorrection or overcorrection
- Problems with corneal healing
- Inflammation or infection
- a temporary deterioration in visual quality
The individual risk depends, among other things, on the method, the initial findings and the aftercare. Therefore, general percentages should not be evaluated without a source and without the associated investigation period.
Negative experiences after laser eye surgery
Various undesirable effects can occur after laser eye surgery. Immediately after the procedure, some patients report a feeling of dryness in the eyes that can last for a few weeks.
Eye drops can also be used. A temporary foreign body sensation or increased sensitivity to light are also possible complaints. This dryness can usually be treated well with eye drops and usually subsides over the course of the healing period. Other short-term ailments include halos and glare, especially at night, which can make it difficult to see at night.
These possible risks and the expected visual performance should be discussed in detail before treatment. These symptoms typically appear in the first few weeks and improve over time. Depending on the method, some patients experience mild pain or discomfort after the procedure, which is normal in the first few days and usually subsides quickly.
Patients who have their presbyopia lasered may experience blurred vision afterwards, while the brain gets used to the new sensory impression. Because with methods such as the PRESBYOND®method, one eye is optimized for the far range, the other for the middle range and both eyes for the near range. Only then does a composite, sharp image emerge in the brain. It may take a few weeks for this to work smoothly.

Long-term complications are less common, but they can be more serious. This includes permanent dryness of the eyes; in rare cases, patients report persistent visual defects such as double vision or blurred vision that have not been fully corrected by surgery. These persistent visual defects can affect the daily lives of those affected.
It is important to discuss these possible risks of laser eye surgery with the attending ophthalmologist in advance. Regular follow-up examinations help to monitor the healing process and to identify and treat possible complications at an early stage.
Despite these potential risks, most patients report positive experiences with laser eye surgery and a significant improvement in their quality of life after laser eye surgery – the risk of side effects, on the other hand, is low.
“In our practice, we attach great importance to communicating these figures transparently – not to gloss them over, but so that patients can develop realistic expectations. Most short-term complaints such as dry eyes are a normal part of the healing process, not a complication in the proper sense”

Experience report on eye lasers with Nico Auer
Nico Auer from Hitradio antenne1 takes you on his way to a life without glasses. His personal experience report shows the way from consultation to everyday life without glasses and without vision aids. For more than 20 years, he relied on glasses for his nearsightedness – especially in winter, the constantly fogged up lenses bothered him. He has long toyed with the idea of having his eyes lasered in order to benefit from the advantages of this modern treatment.
The focus is on laser correction of the existing defective vision, i.e. an eye laser treatment with which, for example, nearsightedness, farsightedness or a corneal curvature can be treated, depending on the initial situation. The desire for freedom from vision aids grew until he finally decided to undergo treatment at the Bányai Clinic in Leonberg. There he had his dioptres corrected and gained a completely new attitude to life.
In a 3-part video series, Nico shares his experiences with eye lasers – from the first consultation at the Bányai clinic to the first weeks full of joie de vivre without glasses. Exciting insights and personal experiences await you!
Which procedures are suitable?
Not every refractive error is corrected using the same method. Depending on the findings, LASIK, Femto-LASIK, PRK, Trans-PRK or ReLEx SMILE may be considered. Among other things, the dioptres, the cornea, the visual acuity and the desired visual acuity play a role in the selection. Before the procedure, ophthalmologists check which procedure is suitable as part of a preliminary examination.
Treatment is usually carried out with anaesthetic drops. Many patients therefore find the actual procedure to be painless or not very stressful. However, temporary discomfort may occur after laser treatment.
In the case of existing presbyopia or presbyopia, different prerequisites apply than in the case of pure nearsightedness. An astigmatism – i.e. a corneal curvature – can also be treated with a suitable refractive procedure, depending on the severity.
Positive vs. Negative Eye Laser Experiences: Why the Benefits Outweigh
In the case of eye lasers, the positive experiences clearly outweigh the negative ones. Many patients report significant improvements in their vision and an increased quality of life. The freedom of no longer having to wear glasses or contact lenses is a major benefit that facilitates many activities.
In the long term, patients also save costs by eliminating expenses for new glasses and contact lenses. Modern technologies and experienced doctors ensure that complications are rare and that most procedures run smoothly. In addition, innovative methods such as SMILE® Pro have become established, with which eye lasers can be carried out in an unexpectedly gentle manner.
Visual acuity often improves rapidly, and many achieve a visual quality they never thought possible before. These advantages make laser eye surgery an extremely attractive option.
Avoid negative experiences and rely on experienced experts
To avoid negative experiences with eye lasers, it is crucial to rely on experienced experts. An important quality feature is the certification by the Commission for Refractive Surgery (KRC), the joint commission of the German Ophthalmological Society (dog) and the Professional Association of Ophthalmologists of Germany (BVA).
At Bányai Neue Augen in Stuttgart or Karlsruhe, quality, safety and patient care are therefore paramount. The experienced medical team and the use of state-of-the-art technologies such as femtosecond and excimer lasers ensure precise and safe interventions.
Comprehensive patient education and care before, during and after the procedure are essential. Bányai Neue Augen attaches great importance to ensuring that patients are fully informed about the procedure, possible risks and the expected results. Already in the preliminary discussion of laser eye treatment in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, all your questions will be answered – be it the behaviour after laser eye treatment, the risk of side effects or the technology used.
Thorough preliminary examinations and detailed follow-up plans ensure that you receive the best eye laser method for you and that the healing process is optimally monitored. Regular follow-up examinations help to identify and treat any complications at an early stage, minimising the risk of long-term problems and allowing you to fully rejoice in the result.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about negative experiences with laser eye surgery
Immediately after the procedure, patients most often report temporary dryness in the eyes, a slight foreign body sensation or increased sensitivity to light. So-called halos or glare effects – especially at night – can also occur in the first few weeks. These symptoms are part of the normal healing process and can be well treated with moisturizing eye drops.
Complications during the procedure are extremely rare. Potential risks include inadequate flap formation (e.g. in LASIK), a low risk of infection, and slight under- or over-correction of vision. Modern technologies such as Femto-LASIK or the ReLEx SMILE®/SMILE® Pro procedure as well as experienced surgeons can usually avoid such errors or compensate for them directly during treatment planning.
Permanent complaints are very rare. In individual cases, persistent dry eyes or residual visual defects (such as double vision or blurring) can occur if the tissue heals unevenly. If the desired visual acuity is not fully achieved after the healing phase, laser eye correction can help in many cases.
In treatments for presbyopia, one eye is often optimized for distance and the other for proximity. The brain needs some time (usually a few weeks) to combine these two visual impressions into a sharp overall picture. The initial feeling of blurring is completely normal during this acclimatization phase.
The most important steps are a thorough preliminary examination and the choice of a specialized clinic with experienced ophthalmologists. In addition, follow the individual follow-up and drip schedule exactly, adhere to all control appointments and ensure good hygiene for the first few days (e.g. no rubbing of the eyes and no make-up).
