Laser eye treatment Age: Recommendation by Dr. med. Bányai
Many people ask themselves: Am I too old to have laser eye surgery – or maybe still too young? The answer is not general – because whether you are 30, 50 or over 60: the possibilities of modern eye surgery today are as diverse as the patient’s CVs. While young adults often want to get rid of their glasses forever, later years are often about more quality of life despite presbyopia.
Dr. med. Daniel Bányai and his team from Bányai Neue Augen accompany people of all ages on the way to better vision – with many years of experience, state-of-the-art technology and a clear goal: a tailor-made solution for every eye. In this article, you will learn how to determine the ideal age for laser eye surgery, which methods are suitable for which phase of life – and what really matters.
When can you have eye lasers?
In Germany, eye lasers are possible from the age of 18, provided that the eye is fully developed and all corresponding preliminary examinations have been successful. In Switzerland and Austria, adolescents from the age of 16 are already approved for laser eye treatment.
Laser eye surgery up to 45 years
There are different treatment methods to laser the eye. For example: LASEK, PRK, Lasik, Femto-Lasik and the minimally invasive method SMILE Pro. At the moment, however, the latter is only possible with short-sightedness. Read more about laser eye surgery for nearsightedness, laser farsightedness or laser corneal curvature. Astigmatism can also be corrected in the laser eye center.
Before each operation, a thorough foreground examination must be carried out to ensure that the conditions of the eye, such as vision, corneal thickness and corneal elasticity, fit. In addition, the eye should be healthy, so it can be ensured that the risks are minimized. Find out more about when you can start laser treatment for long-sightedness.
Eye lasers Age limit – Up to what age does laser eye surgery make sense?
Basically, there is no age limit for eye lasers. Laser eye surgery is useful until old age, as long as the eyesight is still sufficient and there are no contraindications. However, special criteria, such as poorer blood circulation in the eye or age-related changes, can make the procedure more difficult. There are also certain dioptric limits where laser eye treatment is no longer possible. Up to which dioptres is laser eye surgery possible?
Long-term consequences are not known, but it is important to follow up regularly.
Laser eye surgery over 50
Many people over 50 want a life without glasses – especially when presbyopia starts to interfere with everyday life. Laser eye surgery is also possible at this age, but it must be checked whether the lens is still clear or whether the first opacities (onset of cataracts) are already present. “From around the mid-50s, we check very carefully whether a pure laser treatment or a lens exchange is the more sustainable solution,” explains Dr. med. Daniel Bányai. In many cases, refractive lens surgery, in which multifocal lenses are used, is recommended instead of pure LASIK.
Laser eye surgery over 60
Laser eye surgery is also possible for patients over 60 years of age. However, it is important to find a qualified and experienced team of eye surgeons, as the results of the procedure depend on the skill of the surgeon. It is also advisable to thoroughly discuss all potential risks with the doctor. At the age of 60, cataracts can also be operated on.
As a rule, the focus is no longer on classic LASIK, but on the question: Is your own lens still healthy enough or does an exchange make sense? In many patients of this age, the lens is already slightly cloudy – an impending cataract. With modern premium lenses, it is often possible to see without glasses at a distance and close by – a real gain in quality of life even with over 60 years.

What are the risks of laser eye surgery?
Laser eye surgery is a state-of-the-art method of correcting vision. Experienced surgeons and the latest techniques can minimise the risks of laser eye surgery. Dry eyes may occur temporarily after laser eye surgery, but are treated with appropriate therapies and are only short-lived. Temporary light sensitivity and glare sensitivity are normal side effects of laser treatment, which decrease significantly after a few weeks. Visual acuity improves rapidly.
However, these risks should not lead to rejection of laser eye surgery. Rather, they should motivate you to opt for high-quality and careful treatment. Short-term blurred vision is a common consequence of laser treatment. As a rule, patients see sharply and clearly after a few days.
How much does laser eye surgery cost?
The cost of an eye laser treatment varies depending on the eye disease and the procedure used to correct it. In principle, the treatment costs start from €990 per eye. With ophthalmology Bányai, you can benefit from interest-free installment payments. A personal consultation and preliminary examination will give you detailed information about the cost of laser eye treatment.
Does eye lasers pay for health insurance?
The cost of laser eye treatment is usually not covered by the statutory health insurance. In most cases, the German statutory health insurance companies do not regard laser eye treatment as a medically necessary service, as it is an aesthetic procedure to improve vision.
However, there are exceptions where the statutory health insurance can partially or completely cover the costs. For example, if there is a medical need for laser eye treatment, for example in certain eye diseases that make conventional glasses or contact lenses ineffective. Private health insurance companies, on the other hand, often offer special supplementary insurance that can cover the costs of laser eye treatment. It is advisable to carefully check the insurance conditions before treatment and to contact the insurance company if necessary to clarify the possible assumption of costs.
In any case, it is important to carry out a detailed consultation with an ophthalmologist or an eye clinic before laser eye treatment in order to determine the individual options and costs of laser eye treatment.
What are the alternatives to laser eye surgery?
If you want to opt for an alternative to laser eye surgery, you have the choice between glasses, contact lenses or intraocular lenses. Each of these options has its own pros and cons, and each is a powerful solution to your vision problems. There are also eye surgeries in which an eye laser is used, e.g. in cataract surgery, glaucoma or green cataract surgery.
Preliminary examination at the ophthalmologist
With a thorough consultation and preliminary examination by a specialist, you can make the right decision for your personal needs. One of the biggest advantages of laser eye treatment is the sustainable result. You no longer need a visual aid after laser eye treatment. No matter what diopter values you have, the result of refractive surgery is a clear view.

Which eye diseases can be lasered?
In the case of eye diseases, various refractive errors can be corrected by means of eye laser procedures. The excimer laser and the femtosecond laser are used to change the refractive power of the eye. LASIK surgery is a proven method that is particularly used for nearsightedness, farsightedness and corneal curvature.
The correction of refractive errors is therefore carried out by different procedures. Therefore, a personal consultation is advisable. The person must be 18 years of age at the time of treatment. Of course, laser eye surgery is not a problem for contact lens wearers who want permanent vision correction.
The ideal age for laser eye surgery
The ideal age for laser eye surgery is usually between 25 and 45 years. During this period, vision is usually stable, and there are no age-related changes such as presbyopia or lens opacities (cataracts).
However, eye lasers can also be useful from the age of 50 or over 60 – depending on individual eye health and expectations. Here, other procedures such as lens replacement (CLE) or the combination with presbyopia corrections are often used.
What is important is not so much the age itself, but a thorough medical examination to find the right method for your eyes.
