Symptoms of presbyopia: How can I recognize it?
The symptoms of presbyopia closely resemble those of typical farsightedness, but their causes are different. Presbyopia is a normal part of the aging process and affects many people, usually beginning around age 40. It becomes increasingly difficult to see objects up close clearly, which interferes with everyday activities such as reading or working on a computer.
But how can you recognize this vision problem in practical terms? This article explains the typical symptoms of presbyopia and how they differ from other vision problems, and presents modern treatment options that can restore sharp vision – from visual aids to innovative laser treatments for presbyopia.
Main symptom: poor near vision
The main symptom of presbyopia is the progressive blurring of nearby objects as near vision declines. This is particularly noticeable during activities such as reading, using smartphones, or when viewing small details, typically in handicrafts.
Those affected often notice that they have to hold reading material further away to see the text clearly. Reading a book or the newspaper becomes more difficult, and even reading price tags in the supermarket or working at a screen requires more effort than it does for people with normal vision.
This is because the lens of the eye loses elasticity over time and can no longer adjust quickly enough to focus on nearby objects and produce a sharp image. This change in lens elasticity occurs gradually, as do changes in the ciliary muscle. The ciliary muscle is also important for accommodation—the eye’s ability to change the shape of the lens and thus focus incoming light from objects at different distances.
Because this decline in visual acuity occurs gradually with age, it often goes unnoticed. It is usually not recognized until the eye’s refractive power has already decreased by several dioptres and near vision loss becomes more noticeable.
Symptoms associated with presbyopia
In addition to poor near vision, ophthalmology recognizes other symptoms that indicate presbyopia. Many people notice increasing eye strain, especially during prolonged near work. Constantly trying to see nearby objects clearly can lead to headaches and eye fatigue.
In addition, many people find they need more light to read because dimmer lighting further worsens their already impaired near vision. These symptoms occur particularly in the evening or after prolonged eye strain.
If you notice such symptoms, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist to determine the cause and consider targeted treatment options for presbyopia.
Many patients, however, only come to my practice once their everyday life is already significantly restricted by presbyopia – which need not be the case.
I feel deep compassion for people who, as a result, have to limit their hobbies or social contacts. I’m all the more pleased to discuss solutions with them so they can fully participate in life again.
Recognizing presbyopia – how to distinguish it from other visual impairments?
Presbyopia is relatively easy to distinguish from myopia (nearsightedness) by its symptoms, since myopia affects distance vision while presbyopia affects near vision. It is more difficult, however, to distinguish presbyopia from hyperopia (farsightedness), as both refractive errors impair near vision.
The main difference is that farsightedness typically appears at a young age and is caused by an eyeball that is too short. Presbyopia, on the other hand, is an age-related process and usually begins around the age of 40.
Due to the similar symptoms, it is important to see an ophthalmologist at the first sign of any change to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment.

Laser treatment for presbyopia: for more independence in everyday life
Traditionally, many people turn to reading glasses, progressive lenses, or contact lenses to improve their near vision. However, these visual aids can be inconvenient in everyday life, so many people opt for refractive surgery.
Laser eye treatment offers an effective, long-term solution and helps increase independence in everyday life. For people who want to permanently correct presbyopia, Bányai Neue Augen therefore offers a variety of modern laser eye procedures.
PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is an advanced method in which the dominant eye is adjusted for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision; both eyes are also adjusted for intermediate vision.
This produces more consistent visual acuity and usually makes visual aids unnecessary. A similar technique is Monovision, a minimally invasive treatment that optimizes near and distance vision.
Another procedure at Bányai Neue Augen is refractive lens exchange (RLE). In this procedure, the natural eye lenses are replaced with multifocal intraocular lenses (artificial lenses) that provide clear vision at almost all distances.
This wide range of treatment options for presbyopia can be reassuring, but it can also quickly feel overwhelming when choosing the right procedure.
This is why we support you in making this decision and, through follow-up examinations, vision tests, and a consultation, determine which procedure is ideal for you. That way, nothing will stand in the way of your journey to a more independent life!
