If only a mild form of astigmatism is present, the affected person often does not perceive any visual impairment at all. Since the human eye is not naturally perfectly built, most people have a slightly curved cornea anyway. A value of the corneal curvature of 0.25 diopters is therefore still in the normal range, can be compensated by the eye and usually does not require artificial correction.

On the other hand, if the cornea is bent too much, the vision near and far can be distorted, making round things appear long and rod-shaped, for example. The German term Stabsichtigkeit (also called dotlessness) is also derived from this phenomenon. A corneal curvature is usually genetic and therefore unavoidable. Other causes of astigmatism include eye injuries, refractive errors, or corneal diseases.
